Clearing the path to an optimal life

Using EMDR in Therapy

When trauma occurs, everything that is going on at that time freezes with the thoughts, smells, sights, sounds, physiological sensations, and how we at the time interpret the situation. Every time after that when there is something reminds us of that incident, be it a certain sound, smell, a look, a physical sensation, or a certain thought, our brain brings up everything that occurred during the traumatic incident as if it is going on RIGHT NOW. This part of the brain is incapable of distinguishing between the past and the present.

I specialize in a type of therapy called EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). This type of therapy was developed and specifically utilized for people who have experienced traumas both large and small. By zeroing in on the original event that caused the trauma we essentially “melt away” the effects of the trauma without having to re-experience the incident. The analogy I like to use is that we identify what is causing you disturbance in the present, then we identify what your negative thoughts are and what you would like to believe about yourself instead and then we take a “train ride” back to the original incident, unload the negative belief, upload the positive belief and then come back into the present time.    EMDR is an empirically validated treatment and is recognized by the American Psychological Association and the American Psychiatric Association.
